Opened in 2013, The White Birch Inn is the natural choice for luxury lodging in downtown Clayton.

For owner Brenda Patterson, the Inn has been a labor of love. “We thought the building was the perfect location for an inn,” she recalls. “Clayton was a casual, quaint mountain town back then with no luxury lodging. We felt that the town was missing out on an entire travel segment. Potential visitors were driving up 441 to Highlands and not even realizing our sweet town was just a left turn away.”

Brenda, an interior designer and her husband, Chuck, a commercial architect, joined forces to gut, redesign and renovate the 100-year-old building. The downstairs opened in 2013 as a restaurant and bar. Then the following year, the inn opened with its guestrooms upstairs. In 2015 the restaurant closed, so now the entire building is devoted to the Inn.

“Guests will notice that our Inn is filled with only the finest quality  –From custom-made draperies, upholstery and furniture, to Egyptian cotton linens, L’Occitane toiletries and Villeroy and Bach breakfast china. They will be treated to elegant rustic textures, like original antique wood floors, bark walls, bathroom vanities using natural materials, and a hammered copper soaking tub, Brenda adds. “No expense was spared and the attention to detail was important to us. Customer service is our priority and quality is our pride and joy.”

The White Birch Inn boasts six uniquely decorated guestrooms and suites, a gym, and an upstairs guest lounge for early morning coffee and tea.  A full a la carte breakfast, included in the daily rate, is offered downstairs in the sunny dining room or outside on the patio. The Inn has won five consecutive TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence and is a member of the prestigious Select Registry group of inns. Additionally the inn garners rave reviews from guests around the world.

During the pandemic, all guests and staff are required to wear masks inside, where there is a regular program of ongoing cleaning and sanitation. Evening turndown service and the daily wine-and-cheese hour are personalized for each room to minimize staff contact.
