In 2022, Piedmont University will celebrate 125 years of providing a quality, liberal arts education in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Its achievements in helping economically disadvantaged students advance in their lives and careers landed Piedmont at No. 18 on U.S. News’ Top Performers on Social Mobility list among regional universities in the South.
Piedmont has campuses in Demorest and Athens. Demorest is home to Piedmont’s residential campus, which is situated on approximately 300 acres. It has 10 residence halls, and construction on its largest to date is underway. Once Mystic Hall is completed, the campus will be home to roughly 750 students.
Piedmont offers degrees from four colleges: College of Education, College of Nursing & Health Sciences, Walker College of Business, and College of Arts & Sciences.
The Demorest campus boasts several fine art venues, including the 500-seat Arrendale Amphitheater, Swanson Center for the Performing Arts and Communication, and the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art in downtown Demorest. Piedmont’s $10.1 million Conservatory of Music houses 27 Steinway pianos. Fifteen percent of students participate in Fine Arts academic programs, ensembles, and performances.
Piedmont is a member of NCAA Division III, with teams competing in the USA South Athletic Conference. More than 400 student-athletes compete on Piedmont’s men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, and track & field; women’s softball and volleyball; and men’s baseball.
Athletic facilities include the Johnny Mize Athletic Center, named for the professional baseball player (1936-1953), coach, and scout known as the “The Big Cat.” The Loudermilk Baseball Complex opened in 2005 with former Atlanta Braves greats Phil Niekro and Steve Bedrosian throwing out ceremonial first pitches.
The student Commons houses Campus Dining, a Barnes & Noble bookstore, a Starbucks/On-the-Go Cafe, indoor track and gym, and racquetball court.
The Piedmont University Athens Campus, located in the heart of Normaltown at 1282 Prince Avenue, offers degree-completion programs in a variety of career-oriented majors, including nursing, and graduate programs in education and business.
Total enrollment for the two campuses combined is approximately 2,600 students.
