  • Founded in 1966 as a student-led project, Foxfire preserves and celebrates Southern Appalachian culture through oral history, artifacts, and hands-on learning.

What began as a classroom magazine grew into a nationally recognized book series and the Foxfire Village Museum. Today, Foxfire documents and shares Appalachian stories and skills through education programs, publications, demonstrations, and community events.

Explore our museum, meet our demonstrators, visit the Children’s Village — miniature Appalachian log cabins for kids to play in—or take a piece of Foxfire home from our Mercantile, where Appalachian tradition lives on.

A wonderful way to spend an afternoon! We stepped back in time during our visit and learned a lot. The children loved making J hooks in the blacksmith forge and visiting the Village Weaver, and the broommaker’s cabin was full of AMAZING creations, like something out of a Harry Potter story. The fact that students still create the Foxfire magazine is AWESOME, and we are so thankful this place is in existence.

Thanks again for a great visit!
