Blue Ridge Toys is owned and operated by Sandra Glichowski. As a former educator and the mother of two young children, Sandra has a passion for finding toys that can be both fun and educational. Since opening in 2017, Blue Ridge Toys has grown to offer an ever-widening array of products, from games, puzzles, art supplies and comic books to musical instruments hand-made locally.
“Every employee truly believes in our motto: ‘Where Play is a Way of Life,’” Sandra says. “So we carry toys for all ages from those just born to those big ‘kids’ who were wise enough to never grow up.”
Blue Ridge Toys aims to carry the most fun and unique products available. The carefully curated selection of toys is always changing. “We test the items ourselves with our team of fun experts to ensure you’re always getting the best of the best,” Sandra notes. “We search for toys around the world. We want to be seen as the local toy store. Main Street has a reputation to be geared towards tourist and we want the local kids here to feel like we are the local toy store – THEIR store.”
It’s that community commitment that drives Sandra and her staff. “The store is happy,” she exclaims. “The joy we get from the look on grandparents’ faces because they know they got something special — and the excitement that brings — is what makes it all worth it. Little ones coming into store and finding the perfect treasure! Creating memories is one of our top priorities.”
For Easter 2020 – when the pandemic had created extra hardship in the community – Blue Ridge Toys partnered with several local merchants and kind-hearted customers to build and deliver 600 Easter baskets to families in need. “We are so grateful to this community and for the memories we’re creating,” Sandra adds. “We know we are doing are good job if people walk in here with a smile on their face and walk out with an even bigger smile.”

We stopped in Clayton on our way to pick up our son from summer camp in Asheville, and stopped at Blue Ridge Toys while we were in town. Our first experience with them was at a nearby restaurant where they hosted a game night. One of the owners had several games that people could play while they dined. It was a great way to learn about new, fun games, and to try something different than the standard board games that have been around for decades. Our family’s favorite was The Climbers. Definitely check it out!
The following day we went to the actual toy store and were blown away by their selection. You can tell that the owners take their time researching different toys and order unique items that you won’t find at most big box retailers. They also had a great selection of toys open to test or to just let your kids play with while everyone shopped. Along with unique toys that I’ve never seen before, they also had some older ones that I haven’t seen since I was a little kid, like Spin Art and a hand-held Centipede game. While we were there, we bought a few things for our boys (4 & 11), as well as a few baby shower gifts for friends, a birthday gift for our friend’s soon-to-be 3 year old, an RC truck for my husband (because us parents like toys too), and some super cute avocado earrings for myself. It was nice to be able to shop for multiple ages ranging from newborn to adult, in one place.

Blue Ridge Toys is a child's paradise. Whenever my family is in Clayton, my son insists on stiping by the toy store. He has a number of toys and games from there that we have never been able to find anywhere else. The quality of the toys is unbelievable and they all inspire imaginative play. You will also not meet anyone more kind and knowledgeable about children's toys than the owners and staff of Blue Ridge Toys. Make sure you stop by if you are anywhere near Clayton. You will not be disappointed!
