Habersham Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) is a member-owned electric cooperative serving approximately 26,000 members in six counties in Northeast Georgia. HEMC provides safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to its members.
Formed in 1938, Habersham EMC was created to bring electricity to the rural areas of Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens and White counties. Creating a cooperative was necessary to provide reliable power to the farm families in rural areas.
HEMC is also affiliated with the Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (Georgia EMC), Georgia System Operations Corporation, the Georgia Energy Cooperative, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the Oglethorpe Power Corporation, Rural Utilities Service, the Georgia Transmission Corporation and Green Power EMC, a partnership of 28 Georgia electric membership cooperatives researching and offering electricity generated by renewable resources.
Habersham EMC’s 101 employees and nine directors continue the work set by their founding members to provide safe and reliable electricity for all members at an affordable price. HEMC is active in the communities they serve and is an innovative community leader serving Northeast Georgia with safe, clean, reliable, affordable energy. The cooperative also provides opportunities for members to improve their energy efficiency and supports renewable energy initiatives.
In addition to electrical service, Habersham EMC’s subsidiary, Trailwave Fiber, Inc. offers high speed broadband services for both residential and commercial subscribers.
