Melissa Heiden’s father opened River Campground in the 1980s. At the time she and her husband Tim took over management of the popular Lakemont property in 2017, it was in desperate need of some TLC. “It had been neglected,” she says. “There were several large trees down and it required a general cleanup.”
Once that work had been completed, River Campground was returned to its original condition, “A good, old-fashioned campground,” Melissa says.
But there is plenty there for the outdoor adventurer: 26 campsites, two bathhouses, a playground and rec center, firewood and camp store including arts & crafts from a local artisan. There are spots dedicated to both tent and RV campers with water and electricity. River Campground also offers group lodging and is perfect for scouts or school groups. We also have areas that can be rented for day gatherings. The tent sites are $35 per night and feature covered shelters and lots of shade. The RV spots are $40 and have 30- and 50-amp hookups.
Located on the Tallulah River and just four miles north of the Tallulah Gorge, the campground also has two primitive cabins and one river cabin for those visitors wanting more creature comforts.
“We’re a family campground welcoming children and pets,” Melissa adds. The campground features live music each Saturday night – usually Bluegrass. And there’s a spectacular Halloween Haunted House on the grounds each October.

“Our guests are amazed at the transformation of the campground in the last few years,” Melissa notes. “We let campers know about local attractions to ensure they have a good time in Rabun County.”
