The Piggly Wiggly supermarket is a familiar site in small towns across the South. However, the store in Dillard is extra special. It’s owned by a local couple – Jeff and Lisa Harris – who stepped in last year to keep the previous owners from closing the location.
Piggly Wiggly is the only convenient grocery option for residents of northern Rabun County. Jeff and Lisa recognized the need and rescued the location from closure.
“The north end of the county; Dillard, Mountain City, and Sky Valley, even Otto, North Carolina, and areas to the north,” need this store, says Jeff. “This is just something that needs to be in Rabun County. This community has used this store for years and years and depends on this store because a lot of people can’t drive all the way to Clayton or Franklin so we want to be there for that end of the county.”
Beyond just keeping the Piggly Wiggly open, however, the Harris’s have transformed into a local, family-owned grocery store. “It will stay the Piggly Wiggly name, but we want to get it back to a local store,” Jeff adds. “I want local produce. I want as many local items in the store as I can get. We are going to make sure that the meat is some of the best meat around. We want it to be a family-type store and that is what we are striving to be.”
Mission accomplished. The new and improved Piggly Wiggly in Dillard is always sparking clean, fully stocked with fresh local produce and high-end meats. In addition to the grocery essentials, there’s also an impressive selection of wines and beers.
The store now offers curbside pickup. Call the store at 706.746.2624 and place your order. They prefer one day’s notice if possible or at least three hours to complete your order for pickup.
